CLOUDED YELLOWS

No less than 4 CLOUDED YELLOWS was present today at Pitstone, feeding on wild flowers at the SE corner of the large grassy expanse opposite the Industrial Estate. They were very mobile and difficult to photograph but Francis Buckle did exceptionally well in securing at least 3 excellent shots (see below). Francis also had a single Painted Lady butterfly whilst I tallied 170+ Large White, 85 Common Blue, a few Small Heath and the odd Small Tortoiseshell.

Otherwise, in terms of birds, College Lake BBOWT had 3 Common Snipe and 3 Hobby (per Paul Reed), Wilstone just 1-2 GARGANEY (David Bilcock) and Ivinghoe Beacon just 1 WHINCHAT and a good selection of Lesser Whitethroat, Common Whitethroat and Willow Warbler (Mike & Rose Collard)

Elsewhere in Hertfordshire, there was no sign of the Wryneck today, just 1 WHINCHAT at Croxley Common Moor being of interest
